Obituary:
Heading: Adrianne Nail Coats Dateline: Greer Adrianne N. Coats, 75, died peacefully at her vacation home in Pawley’s Island, S.C. on Tuesday March 9, 2010, of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband of 53 years, Sidney O. Coats was at her bedside. Born March 2, 1935, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Adrianne was the daughter of the late Adrian B. Nail and Jane Willis Nail. She graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and where she became one of the school’s first exchange students, spending a year in Southampton, England, in the early 1950s when foreign travel for students was uncommon and exciting enough to make the newspapers. Married in 1956, Adrianne spent the first half of her wedded life in Niles, Michigan, where she and her husband raised their two children. There she was a kindergarten and elementary school teacher, specializing in reading. The family moved to Greer in 1980 and quickly made lifelong friends of the “Creekers” in their Sugar Creek neighborhood. They became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Greer, both joining the choir. Adrianne continued teaching first grade for fifteen more years at Monaview School in Greenville. Adrianne was an avid cook and lifetime swimmer, a lover of pools and beaches. In retirement she enjoyed time for travel, especially to Hawaii and to Pawley’s Island on the South Carolina coast. But nothing meant more to her than her family, highlighted by spending time with four grandchildren she so adored. Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughter, Cynthia Forman, of Joliet, Illinois, and her two children, Jennifer and Brian; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Beth Coats, and their two children, Allison and Matthew; all of Charlotte, North Carolina; and a sister, Nancy Nail Molitor of Atlanta, Georgia, her husband and their two children. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church of Greer, conducted by Rev. Wayne Cole and Rev. Ray White. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Wood Mortuary and immediately after the funeral service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The family is at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of South Carolina, 4124 Clemson Blvd., Suite L, Anderson, S.C. 29651 or to First Presbyterian Church of Greer, 100 School Street, Greer, S.C. 29651.
